Knowing God

A.W. Tozer said it best: “What enters our mind when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” The late Dr. Norman Geisler, my mentor, drilled into the heads of his students the critical urgency of knowing the true God truly. First, all basic theological truth depends on God’s attributes. How we value the Son of God or the Word of God depends greatly on how we value God. Second, without knowing the true God, we lack the discernment to recognized false gods. Third, ideas have consequences, and the bigger the idea, the bigger the consequences. There is no bigger “idea” than God. Fourth, our spiritual growth is dependent upon our understanding of God: “This is eternal life, that they know you the only true Godand Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” (John 17:3) Or, “Be ye holy, for I am holy.” Finally, to know and love God is the foremost command, and to know God should be our greatest pursuit: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me” (Jeremiah 9:23-24).
